I'm back from Moscow! I came home on Saturday night to my weird-smelling apartment, where my lovely boyfriend had left some red, white and blue flowers and an apple pie. Aw. I've been stumbling around and falling asleep way too early, but today I finally managed to sit still for four hours and get all my photos up on flickr. I lugged around a million-pound camera for a REASON, goddammit. You can see the set by clicking the photo above, or see a fancy enormous slideshow here.

Two weeks is just about long enough to see the city, and my fossilized language skills served me better than I expected. My mom and I spent as much time in the homes of friends and family as we did doing touristy things, so I think I got a pretty balanced picture of life there. Russians basically want to feed you and make you fat for the winter. The city is growing fast, perpetually under construction and clogged with cars. It feels like everyone is overcompensating for the time when no one had any stuff at all by getting lots of stuff and waving it around to make sure you can see it. The people and the architecture are both much dressier than in America. There is an intense preoccupation with everything imported. Food is EXPENSIVE. And if it's not expensive it's covered in mayonnaise. Good thing I did so much walking.

Highlights were the Nikulin Circus and the Tretyakov Gallery, because I am a cultured young lady. I had a really good time with my mom. I don't think I've spent this much time with her since I went away to school, and it was really good to spend it as adults rather than as cranky-kid-and-parent. Though there was a tiny bit of that too.

It's hard to sum up a trip that wound up being pretty personal... the photos do a better job. All in all I'm glad I went and I'm glad I'm home. No one can ever make me eat a beet again.

Also true for Ukrainians!

Awesome photos, thank you for sharing them. It's funny, our family of 4 lived in a one room apartment, too. I'm going back to visit Kiev again this fall.

The fake "soon to be looking renovated like this" facades look great in your pics, even if you say they're less impressive in person. All of Moscow looks clean and unpolluted in your photos.

For years now I've been looking at photo blogs of industrial decay and abandoned factories from all over the world and a lot of the photographers are Russian. They make Russia in general and Moscow in particular look like one big pile of rust and debris. Your pics were all the more stunning because of this.

Moscow actually is pretty dirty, and a lot of it is not in the best shape. There's a lot of effort recently to give it all a fresh coat of paint, but especially as you leave the center you see things get less nice. I tried to frame out all the dirt and cars and only put up the pretty pictures. /:)

All of your pictures are immensely beautiful. Thank you for sharing them. It makes me want to go there. But I'm not overly fond of beets.

Yeah, you'd better sit that one out. They make you eat a test beet upon admission at the border.

you also came home to babies!

wow those pictures are so awesome...

I think I love Russia more than I can put in words even to myself, it's always been like a secret love.
I've been taught not to like it but there's so much about it I love.

I can't wait to go home myself... haven't been home since I came to america.
*sigh*

And they are SPOTLESS. Not a single puddle of mystery-juice to be seen. Apparently the Metro has as many passengers in a day as London and New York combined!

Love it, Vera! What brilliant colors. Now you've made me want to take a 10-hour plane ride to go shopping for Uzbek earthenware.

I'm glad you had a good time, especially hanging out with your mom and relatives. It's nice when family pleasantly surprises you by being awesome!

I like beets? But I don't like dill or sour cream, so I'd probably wither and die.

Thanks for letting me stay with you, again! It totally got me off to a good start. I sent you guys a postcard to your (memorized!) address. Maybe it'll show up in the next three weeks. *_*

It's possible to avoid the beets (just don't eat the purple foods) but the other two are snuck into everything! Even the apple pie! Well, except for the dill. :)
